[MBTI Spotlight of the Day: Valentine’s Day Edition] Kimi No Na Wa – INTJ x INFP

Since it’s Valentine’s Day, we present to you a short MBTI analysis of one of the hottest couples in anime: TAKI AND MITSUHA FROM KIMI NO NA WA (YOUR NAME).

Taki Tachibana

An INTJ, Taki has always had a singular vision: to become an architect (Ni). He’s always been very ambitious when it comes to attaining his goals, making a good use of his Te along the way. Of course, until meeting (and later, losing) Mitsuha triggers his developing Fi in the process. He begins to develop a sense of attachment towards Mitsuha (he even tries to make her life better using his Te), leading him into a prolonged state of Se grip when she “disappears” (impulsively going on a trip to look for Itomori even though 1) he doesn’t know where it is and what the town is called 2) the only clue he has is a drawing of the town 3) he’s never even met Mitsuha before) and later a Ni-Fi loop when he finds out that the girl he’s been switching bodies with is no more, yet still decides to look for her due to his lack of Te at this point of the movie. Moving on from there, Taki, using his Ni, suddenly realises that there’s still a way that he can save Mitsuha from dying – and he utilises his Te and Se to formulate a rescue plan (which succeeds in the end), and his Te to effectively lead Mitsuha’s friends in executing his plan. Yet, his inferior Se doesn’t seem to stop there. It shows up again at the end of the movie, where it is shown that the low demand for architects in Tokyo makes it unrealistic for Taki to pursue his dream. Nevertheless, Taki is still one of the few examples of a healthy INTJ in fiction, no matter how unrealistic or absurd he gets in the movie.

Mitsuha Miyamizu

As an INFP, the most noticeable thing about Mitsuha is her Fi-Si loop. She makes it clear that she dislikes Itomori and its strict traditions by shouting “I HATE THIS TOWN!” several times during the course of the movie. At first, she shows strict adherence to tradition and avoids confrontation, making her appear to be an ISFJ at a glance. However, an ISFJ would not hold any resentment to upholding tradition and social expectations. Mitsuha is not content in Itomori because she feels that the town is holding herself back yet she does not dare to break its traditions, thus leading her auxiliary Ne to act out and dream of a life in Tokyo. 1) Mitsuha has never lived in Tokyo, nor 2) does she have any tangible idea on what she plans on doing once she arrives in Tokyo. It further emphasizes that her aspirations to live in Tokyo is simply the manifestation of the much neglected Ne.

Her inferior Te is underdeveloped. She is incapable of standing up for herself, allowing herself to be pushed around by her father and her class mates. Her confrontation with her father over the news that Itomori might be hit by the meteor goes poorly because she is not able to stand her ground and articulate herself well. Likewise, had she developed Te, she would not be as unhappy as she is, because it is her inability to reach out for what she wants that results in the Fi-Si loop. She develops her extroverted auxiliary and inferior function after switching body with Taki, being able to convince her Father to evacuate the town and saving it from destruction.

Though they are not a couple until the very end of the movie, they bear the markings of a healthy relationship. Both are able to establish and respect each other’s boundaries, readily help the other overcome difficulties in their lives and communicate in an earnest manner. Taki teaches Mitsuha to develop her repressed extroverted functions, while Mitsuha prompts Taki to develop his Fi by being setting up a date for him and later his affection for Mitsuha. Though Taki’s impulse to seek for Mitsuha is the result of Se grip – and grips tend to be malicious in nature – it saves Mitsuha and the people of Itomori.

MBTI Spotlight: INFP (Max Caulfield – Life Is Strange)

“I’ve always seen the world through my own lens finder. Maybe it’s a way for me to be part of the world, but at a safe distance.”

Fi – Max’s journey throughout the story heavily revolves around self-identity and morality. Her Fi proves to be her strongest function as she holds so many personal feelings regarding not just people but also animals and inanimate objects. She also doesn’t seem to concern herself with the public opinion or communal values, going instead with what she feels is right. This may lead her to do things that break the law or defy the norms – sacrificing the needs of many and prioritizing her friendship with Chloe.

Ne – Max is not easily bothered by change. She is adaptable and got used to her time-rewinding powers rather quickly. She’s also open to possibilities but this also makes her frequently doubt her own choices. Max elaborately uses her powers and initially shows no qualms about messing up with timelines and going back and forth in time to change consequences. (A more dominant Si would be troubled by the non-linearity of time).

Si – Her tertiary function helps her in utilizing her powers by recalling past memories, especially when she uses photographs to go back in time. Max also displays a penchant for nostalgia, choosing the retro analog camera as her favorite tool of photography. On the other hand, the past sometimes drives her to do irrational things. Her past bond with Chloe fuels the desire to mend what was broken. The Ne-Si dynamic explains her frantic efforts that end up creating several alternate timelines.

Te – As her weakest function, Max only uses Te when she really, really has to, such as when standing up to bullies like Victoria and Nathan or difficult adults such as Mr. Jefferson, David and Frank. In critical moments, Te helps her devise strategies to solve problems, though not easily as effective as a natural Te-user. As it is quite unnatural to her, Max is shown to be quite cynical towards authority and sometimes makes snarky comments in response to things she hates.

MBTI Spotlight: ISFP (Taka One OK Rock/ Takahiro Moriuchi)

ISFPs, also known as The Artists among all MBTI types, have a unique way of looking at life: from the core of their hearts. What they believe in, what they value, and what they see in a literal sense make up their perception. An example of a well-developed ISFP would be Takahiro Moriuchi, the lead singer of One OK Rock.

Fi — Taka’s actions and the things he says during interviews (and even his lyrics) circle around his feelings and beliefs. He often talks about how being in One OK Rock makes him feel, and how his belief in music as a saving device drives him in life. He has said before that he sings for his love of music, and to stand up for those who have been looked down upon as he has once been looked down upon through his songs. He is also known to force security guards to let him see his fans, as he always professed to love them so much. He seems to be private about his emotions, yet they always burst through the surface through his actions and, occasionally, him crying onstage and getting emotional over things (which he’s pretty well-known for).

Se — It has been mentioned in interviews that as a teen, Taka was rebellious and impulsive. He impulsively dropped out of school, quit a boyband, and jumped straight into the world of rock music without looking back. However, as the years went by, he has since developed his Se. His Se is now manifested in the form of his sense of style (his taste in fashion, his frequent habit of dyeing his hair and trying new hairstyles), his love of new challenges such as writing songs in English, his love for art and aesthetics, his habit of jumping onstage (and, uh, falling), his energy onstage, and his love for partying, as frequently displayed on social media.

Ni — Without Taka’s use of this function, the band wouldn’t have gone international. On interviews, Taka often talks about how he plans to break through the barriers of international music, how he plans to write more songs in English (and improve his English, ha) and sing them onstage to reach a larger audience. He wouldn’t stop at being in the biggest band in Japan – he’s always wanted more than that.

Te — At times, Taka can be blunt to the core and hardworking. He’s also been a good leader to the band (thus the nickname “the Emperor”), but other than that he doesn’t show any further use of this function.

(It was hard to type Taka as his lyrics shout Fi-Si and his vision seems Fi-Ne at a glance, yet his interviews show a strong use of Fi-Ni and his social media accounts scream Fi-Se to us. We ultimately decided on ISFP instead of INFP for Taka, as sometimes the art doesn’t necessarily represent the artist’s personality).
